Peppa is a 14yr old Shetland Pony. He was bought by his current owner in 2000, In 2002 he came down with laminitis which is believed to have been brought on by eating a hedge a neighbour had planted, the vet diagnosed toxic laminitis. He was kept on box rest and trimmed by a farrier, after a change of farrier and vet things were not improving very much for Peppa. The farrier was talking about equine podiatrists one day to the owner and this is when I took over the trimming of Peppa.

Because Peppa had been on box rest for a long time we started after the first trim wilth hand walking in pads starting with 10 mins per day and working up to 20. I visited 2 weeks later and we already had progress the false sole had started to come away in the heels and although he was uncomfortable without pads on concrete, in pads he was happy. I continued to lower the heels as much as I could without causing him to become more uncomfortable.

As you can see we still have a way to go with Peppa but we are pleased with the progress we have made to date. Peppa has gone from being very uncomfortable and on total box rest to being out in his starvation paddock all day with some time spent in another paddock with Cedric his field mate. He comes in around 5 every day to get him out of the flies where he has a small amount of haylage and then goes back out again when it has gone dark.

As his owner says "He has been transformed this last year and I am really hoping that next year he will be even better."

Do keep checking back as I will update as we progress.
